For full control over every simulated exploding piece of sweets we choose Houdini with Redshift as the renderengine. And we got, well, full control. A very versatile and flexible setup was rather essential in order to art direct the explosion.
Extra pieces falling close up to the camera were keyframe animated for specific movement. Redshift proved to be a rocksolid and fast engine even with complex subsurface scattering situations in the resulting pile of sweets.
