Kunz und die Welt - Planet Earth Character

Kunz und die Welt

Character development and Pilot production

Saving the world. Not many projects come with that brief. Invited by megaherz for the ZDF streaming series "Kunz und die Welt", we turned Earth itself into a character: cute enough to love, edgy enough to mean it. The process ran the full distance: classical sketches, 3D sculpts, a mocap-ready asset, and finally animation and VFX compositing for the pilot episode.

Making Of Reel

Pencil First
It started with paper, and deliberately so. 2D sketches are fast, cheap, and you can draw a heart on the ones you like. Turnaround is immediate, iterations cost nothing, and you can generate a lot of them, which we did.

Hearts and Crosses
The review process had its own analog charm: printed sketches spread across a table, the team gathered around with markers in hand. Crosses for the casualties, hearts for the ones worth pursuing. There is something about that ritual, the physicality of it, the finality of a cross and the small optimism of a drawn heart, that no digital mood board quite replicates. It also meant everyone was genuinely in the same room, looking at the same thing at the same time, which sounds obvious until you remember how rarely that actually happens. Old school, and for good reason.

From Flat to Round
Once the final 2D sketch had earned enough hearts to become official, it moved into ZBrush, though agreeing on a sketch is not the same as agreeing on a character. Seeing something take shape in three dimensions has a way of reopening questions you thought were settled, in the best possible sense. New angles suggested new ideas, proportions that read well flat needed rethinking in the round, and the creative process continued exactly as it should: by not really stopping.

MotionCapture: Home Court Advantage
With the look locked, the asset moved into mocap production, and that is where having our own inhouse studio makes a real difference. No external bookings, no unfamiliar spaces, no compromises on setup. The studio was built as part of our own infrastructure and designed with long sessions in mind: minimal visible tech, generous sofas, and a food and drinks situation that holds up over hours. Simply making people enjoy those long sessions.
